Sanya to host sixth Asian Beach Games in April

The sixth Asian Beach Games will be held in Sanya, China, from April 22 to 30, 2026, marking Hainan province's first time hosting a major continental beach sports event.
As Hainan pushes forward with its Free Trade Port development, officials expect athletes from 45 countries and regions to compete across 14 sports and 15 disciplines, including open water swimming, water polo, beach athletics, sailing, and dragon boat racing.
"This event blends tradition with innovation, showcasing the diversity of beach sports while combining athletics and tourism," said Chen Tiejun, director of Hainan's tourism and sports department, at a news conference held in Haikou on Friday.
Preparations are underway, with venues for the opening and closing ceremonies completed. Competition facilities are scheduled for phased completion by year-end.
A central organizing committee has outlined over 1,400 tasks to ensure smooth delivery.
"We're mobilizing all resources to deliver a simple, safe, and spectacular event," said Xie Jing, vice-governor, emphasizing smooth logistics for participants.
Organizers unveiled the event's emblem incorporating ocean waves, sunshine, palm trees, and a deer motif, referencing Sanya's nickname, "Deer City". The design's color palette and the numeral "6" signify the sixth edition of the games.
The mascot, "Yaya", is inspired by the Eld's deer, a protected species native to Hainan. In Chinese culture, deer symbolize good fortune, and local lore includes a famed romantic tale linked to Sanya's "Deer City" moniker.
"The visuals capture Sanya's natural beauty and cultural energy," said Sanya Mayor Chen Xi. "This is Hainan's message to Asia and the world."
Organizers are increasing promotion and community engagement as the games approach, positioning the games as both a sporting milestone and a celebration of Asian unity and hospitality.
