In the early stage of his career, 78-year-old artist Xie Tiancheng primarily made oil paintings and gouaches. In the 1980s, he hit a major turning point when he accompanied Liu Haisu, a prominent ink artist, to visit and sketch Huangshan Mountain's impressive scenery in Anhui province.

The journey motivated Xie to explore classic Chinese painting. Liu taught him to integrate the elements of Western art into the ink paintings. He was also inspired by Zhang Daqian, who is recognized as a pioneer of modern Chinese art, particularly his style of blending the traditional qinglyu (blue and green) coloring approach and the semiabstract pocai (splashing colors) shading.
